El Gouna And Taba Heights Are Seeing Stars

The Green Star Hotel Initiative awards Green Stars to 20 hotels in El Gouna and Taba Heights
Release date: 13.09.11

The Green Star Hotel Initiative has awarded its Green Star Certificate to a total of 16 hotels in El Gouna and four hotels in Taba Heights since its formation in 2007.

The hotels have been recognised for their dedication to sustainability and protecting the local environment.

El Gouna’s authentic architecture, sustainable development concept and internal recycling and water treatment plants made it the perfect pilot location for the initiative, which has since been extended to Taba Heights. El Gouna has now been officially recognised as Egypt's most environmentally-friendly holiday destination.

The scheme is the first of its kind in Egypt and aims to improve environmental standards in the Egyptian hotel industry. Depending on the measures put in place and the strength of the hotel’s commitment, hotels are awarded three, four or five Green Stars for successfully improving their environmental performance, saving valuable resources and increasing their use of renewable energy. The scheme concentrates on environmental management, water and energy use and staff training, among other requirements.

As part of Orascom Development (OD), the resort towns of El Gouna and Taba Heights are both committed to maintaining the highest standards in environmental practices and work with local hotels, businesses, residents and visitors throughout the year to minimise any negative impact the resorts’ expanding tourist industry may have on the environment.

The following hotels in El Gouna are now proud holders of five Green Stars: Ali Pasha Hotel, Dawar El Omda Hotel, Mövenpick Resort & Spa, Sheraton Miramar Resort, Steigenberger Golf Resort, Sultan Bey Hotel, The Three Corners Ocean View Hotel, The Three Corners Rihana Inn and The Three Corners Rihana Resort, while in Taba Heights, the Intercontinental, Marriott and Sofitel hotels have also all been awarded five Green Stars. The Arena Inn, Captain’s Inn Hotel, Club Med, Fanadir Hotel, Mosaique Hotel, Panorama Bungalows Resort and Turtle’s Inn Hotel in El Gouna have achieved four Green Stars, as has The Three Corners El Wekala Golf Resort in Taba Heights.
