Rare Creatures Surface In Taba Heights

Diving in Red Sea resort town offers rare glimpses of mimic octopuses and pygmy pipehorses
Release date: 18.10.11

The coral reefs off the coast of Taba Heights are seeing a surge in creatures such as the fascinating and rare mimic octopus and the tiny pygmy pipehorse.

A recent rise in the number of reported diver sightings of both these creatures suggests they may be more common in the area than in previous years.

The mimic octopus, more widely found in the seas of South East Asia, has been increasingly spotted off the coast of Taba Heights. It is quickly gaining notoriety as the most entertaining underwater creature with its impersonations ranging from moray eels to lion fish. Recent sightings of the mimic octopus have occurred in just three metres of water.

The pygmy pipehorse, although more common, is rarely seen in the wild due to its tiny size and remarkable ability to camouflage itself within the red algae when it attaches itself to the reef. The elusive creature has been spotted by quite a few sharp-eyed divers recently – a real treat of the underwater world.

Taba Heights is a diver’s dream and with a 5* diving centre – Red Sea Waterworld – everyone from beginners to experts is able to enjoy the unspoiled waters and rare sightings off the coast of the unique and picturesque Egyptian resort town.
